‘Fortnite’ freaks out as devs realize the true meaning of Peacemaker dance emote, immediately ban it

The Fortnite developers at Epic Games have clearly been enjoying the second season of Peacemaker just as much as the rest of us. John Cena’s titular character soon made it into the game as a skin, with his catchy dance from the opening sequence practically begging to be added to the game’s gargantuan collection of emotes.

There’s only one teeny tiny problem. The latest episode dropped the shock twist that the “perfect dimension” Peacemaker is currently in is Earth-X – a reality in which Nazis won World War II. The show is taking place in a Nazi version of the United States, with a swastika in place of the stars on the American flag.

Eagle-eyed fans quickly spotted that the new opening sequence features dance moves that hint at this twist, with Peacemaker’s arms forming a vague swastika shape. And it’s at this point that the color drained out of the Fortnite devs’ faces as they realized they’ve got a Nazi emote in their game. The solution? Yank it, immediately.

Oops, swastika

It should be underlined that there’s no confirmation that this dance is actually intended to mimic a swastika, though Epic Games is clearly concerned about Warner Bros and DC’s “creative intentions” behind the dance.

They should be. Various countries, but specifically Germany, have extremely strict laws about displaying a swastika, or even hinting at glorifying Nazi symbols, meaning that Fortnite may have been illegal in these countries for as long as the emote was up.

Warner Bros has plausible deniability right now and can simply argue that, just like season one, it’s just a silly dance and a wild coincidence that it mimics a swastika. Even so, given how gamers are, even the suggestion that a specific emote is a reference to Hitler means it’s probably a smart idea to yank it, as it’ll instantly be used to grief other players.

Hopefully, we’ll get confirmation as to whether this dance was intentionally designed to reference the show’s main revelation soon. But, in the meantime, it’s furrowed brows over at Epic and sheepish glances from Warner Bros.
