Why do people pretend traffic is a race?

A woman on TikTok, Elizavet (@lizardsaccord), went viral with a video asking, “So now I gotta be an F1 driver?!” Her boyfriend told her to simply follow him to their destination, and then proceeded to turn the drive into a high-speed chase.
What starts for many of us as the most innocent of phrases, “oh you can just follow me there,” can quickly become a terrifying ordeal. Elizavet’s experience sounds like something straight out of an action movie, with the leading driver blowing past lights and leaving the follower with a tough choice: get reckless or get lost.
The TikTok shows Elizavet driving quickly along windy roads as she struggles to keep her boyfriend’s car in sight. You don’t want to lose the person you’re following, so she has to keep up. The drive quickly spiraled from a manageable distance into a frantic chase as her boyfriend started speeding up open roads and sharply hitting turns.
Stop speeding when people are following you
To be fair, Elizavet did a good job keeping him in sight, but it definitely meant she had to raise her speed to ensure she didn’t lose him in traffic. The reaction in the comments section proves this isn’t just a one-off thing; it seems to be a frustrating trend, particularly among women following male drivers. People shared their own stories, and they were much faster overall to criticize the boyfriend’s driving habits.
One user wrote, “lmao i hate when ppl do this atp just send me the address.” Another shared an even crazier tale, saying, “one time my husband zoomed through a red light talking bout some i thought u were gonna go through too. HOWWWW???” Seriously, running red lights? That’s just reckless. It looks like this whole high-speed follow-me game comes with an unspoken speed limit, too. As one commenter put it, “No cuz why is actively running away from you??? Like???”
On the other hand, a lot of people were quick to call out others who do this, directly for making a simple trip a potentially dangerous chase. People were wondering aloud, “My mom does this every damn time. Like who you running from.”
While the video and comments section are full of lighthearted frustration and funny quips, it’s important to remember the very real dangers of speeding. This is where I have to get serious for a moment and warn you, the reader, because it’s a big deal. Speeding is the cause of a whopping one-third of motor vehicle fatalities. Just drive the speed limit, even if you lose the speeder in the chase.
