She should have checked the mirror.
Sarrah Strimel Bentley, the co-founder for the cancer surrogacy group A Chance for Life Foundation, recently shared a viral story on Instagram that has gained 1.4 million views. She recounts a hilarious and slightly mortifying experience involving a Maryland summer camp drop-off and a dress that basically revealed everything.
For the majority of her video, she stands against a wall, away from natural light, while she tells her story. She starts off by setting the scene for her morning. “I was nude when I dropped my toddler off at summer camp this morning. Let me explain. I left the house this morning thinking that I was just putting on an easy shift dress that I bought at a flea market in the Hamptons last summer for $25.”
Bentley continues her story, stating that she stopped to get some feedback from her husband before leaving. “I asked my husband before I left the house, Honey, does this look dowdy? And he said, Actually, babe, no. It’s so chic. And his eyes lit up with a come-hither stare, which was confusing since it’s a floor-length, long-sleeved shmada that I was wearing.”
That is when things started going wrong
As she made her way through to the camp, she started to notice some strange reactions from the people around her. “Upon walking the half hour walk from our apartment to camp, people began smiling at me, almost like it’s the best day they ever had. And I’m thinking, wow, the next parade was yesterday. The city is on fire and the smiles are getting bigger and people are staring at me longer. And I’m thinking, oh, maybe they think my kid is cute.”
The confusion only cleared up once she reached her destination and spoke to another parent. “I ask one of the school moms. I say ‘hey, can you look at me? Does something look off to you?’” That was when Bentley learned the truth.
“She says ‘Sweetie, your dress is completely see-through, it’s as though you’re wearing nothing.” At this moment in the video, she cuts to a full view of her outfit, laughing in embarrassment as she shows the camera exactly what the camp mom and everyone else had seen.
It is easy to see how a simple misunderstanding of fabric can lead to a wardrobe malfunction, especially with lighter materials. According to the Natural Fashion brand Lotika, the sheerness of linen clothing is a natural property of the fabric, which is related to its unique structure and natural origin. Because linen is known for its lightness and airiness, it can appear more transparent than other materials, especially when you are wearing lighter colors.
It is worth noting that if you are worried about the transparency of your clothing, Lotika suggests that you should be careful with your color choices. White linen is the most translucent because it absorbs the least light, while darker shades like black or navy are much more opaque. The structure of the fiber itself, which is relatively sparse compared to cotton or synthetics, is what allows light to pass through.
Her Instagram followers found the humor in her story immediately. Many of them also knew who was to blame, as User astrogirlrocks commented, “Your husband is fired,” and dhiyalt noted, “I thought you were going to say the moral of the story is to never ask your husband 😂😂😂” Valiakriston wrote, “The perils of checking with your husband instead of the mirror.”
Other users were quick to point out the specific lessons to be learned from her fabric choice. Instagrammer lindsay.richmond16 chimed observed, “I think you may have been more naked in that then if you had actually gone naked idk how to explain it.” The user thehatefulk8 said, “I’ll be honest, I really thought you were exaggerating…but you came with receipts. 🤣 That camp mom is a real one!” User reallyagypsy asked, “Did you walk back home friend? 😂”
Bentley concludes her story with a bit of humorous advice. “And here’s the moral of the story. I highly suggest if you need some pep in your step and you need some reminder that there is good positive energy in the world, wear a see-through dress at Camp Drop-Off.” Perhaps the most telling part of her humor is the caption on her post: “It’s giving ‘CAMP MOMS GONE WILD’”
It was frankly heartening to see the humor with which Bentley approached her wardrobe malfunction. After all, some malfunctions can be super mortifying as a few GAP customers learned, when their faux leather pants came with sound. For some, like track and field athlete Chris Robinson, wardrobe malfunctions come with underwear modeling gigs.
